Abstract

This workshop focuses on learning about women’s role and labour in Sanjeevini Sanghas, Panchayats, Krishi Kendras, Grama Panchayat and other PRIs that have been crucial to the development and wellbeing of people and places. The course is situated in Kundapura Taluk, a region with a history of matrilineal traditions. Women in this region continue to play a major role in local governance systems, collective livelihoods, and community decision-making.

Through field engagements, conversations, and practice-based learning, learners will engage directly with women Grama Panchayat leaders and frontline workers who have worked closely with local governance systems. We will also learn how women collectivise as self-help groups to become financially independent to support their families.

The workshop foregrounds women’s lived experiences, informal knowledge systems, and collective organising practices, while also critically examining the structural, social, and political conditions that shape women’s participation in governance today.

This course is open to learners from diverse backgrounds who work closely with communities and who are interested in understanding how gender intersects with governance, livelihoods, and gender.

  • Gender studies, Political studies, Public Policy, and Sociology research practitioners

  • Grassroots workers engaged with community institutions and local governance

  • Development professionals working in rural livelihoods, governance, and wellbeing initiatives

  • Social workers
