Jafar Miya
A progressive farmer who has developed his own way of natural farming practices through experimentation and learning.
Maintains ecological health in 10 acres of red soil in Chitta. His pride is the Badshahs, a mango stretch raised from native seeds gathered from old, healthy village trees, grown beside hybrid patches, some 900 mango trees in all. He plants sugarcane in zigzag beds six feet apart with vegetables between, refuses to burn residue and farms without chemicals. He reads land closely: pale leaf blades as ghud roga in iron-poor red soil, termites on trees as a sign of dry soil, bunched mango flowers as a growth to watch.
